These earrings are a variation of the original Paprika version, which were inspired by my memory of being in a small restaurant in Hungary with my family while a gypsy family performed for us. A few of the men played violin while the women danced and twirled. I remember their layered clothing, the dresses blossoming out when they twirled around and around. It was in that restaurant that I was first introduced to the spice paprika and I remember loving the color…and flavor! This black and gray version, however, is named for the spice Anise which has a black licorice flavor.
Esmerelda is the name of the gypsy in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame and it was the only gypsy name I knew, so there you go.
The Esmerelda earrings are made with cascading layers of pearl, crystal, black lava and carnelian and are held together by gunmetal and galvanized steel components. The twisted ring at the base is for the twisting skirts of the twirling gypsies, while the overall color is reminiscent of the black licorice flavor of anise. Esmerelda measures 2.25″ from the top curve of the ear wire.
